Hand sculpted Cherry Blossom Pendant with Chrysocolla and Lapis Lazuli
Terracotta Clay is the main component of this beautiful and unique necklace. Terracotta has been used for centuries to make various objects from dishes to houses. It comes naturally from the Earth, in places with iron rich soil. I used this specific type of earthenware clay for that specific connection to nature, which I feel people forget all too quickly.
I used 50ib test Fishing String to ensure that the necklace would be strong.
The Pendant was hand sculpted by my friend, and hand painted by me. cherry blossoms, or Sakura flowers, are symbolic of fleeting beauty and impermanence for their short bloom time, renewal and new beginnings. Cherry Blossoms mark the begining of Spring. They are also a symbol of the friendship between the US and Japan. 3000 Cherry Trees were gifted to Washington DC in 1912.
I chose to incorporate Chrysocolla beads, which represents tranquility, empowerment, and wisdom. It is said to help promote communication, encouraging the wearer to express themselves with confidence. It is said to help release negative emotions and to help accept change. It is said to help with creativity.
I was a little short on clay and chrysocolla so I also chose to incorporate Lapis Lazuli to add length to the necklace. Lapis Lazuli, like terracotta, has also been used by ancient cultures. Like Chrysocolla it also symbolizes wisdom. Lapis is said to symbolize royalty, truth, and spiritual enlightenment as well.
Together these two gemstones create a sense of harmony. When combined they are said to promote emotional insight, good communication, and spiritual insight
Size: About 22 inches long. It was a little tight to put on, but did manage to slip over my head. Should stretch a little over time
